Is it possible to add text above custom search fields?

The module does not allow for text above the search feilds. Instead, you can add custom text to replace the field name, just add it in the Search Label box.

Yes, you can choose not to have Equals in the search fields. Please edit your search field and find "Contains" in the list, then mark both the checkbox to the left and the radio button to the right. The checkboxes are the options you want to give your users and the radiobutton is the default selection.

Most of the time, I just have "Contains" as the only option and then I "Hide Search Conditions" in Module Configuration > Search.
