The country combo and state combo are set as required and sever/client side events turned on.  All other required fields show the error text but not these two.  Any work around?

See if there is a problem by looking at admin>event viewer
If nothing there then also see if you turn the debugger on and if there is any javascript issue.
You can also try to enable debug mode under quick help at the top of module and see if that displays anything.
What is your version of Dynamic Registration and DNN? The module may have a hotfix on snowcovered. Login to your snowcovered account and see if there is a download hotfix for your module version.
If it is a very old module there may be a lack of support and an upgrade is in order especially if your DNN is before DNN 4

No event problems. Once only State and country are not filled in, it shows the summary for country required and state required, but no red text next to the combos. All the other required fields do however.
I enable debug mode but didn't see any errors either.

I also tried using a SQL validation, but no luck. Not sure is this is right:

select IsValid =count(*) from Lists
where text='$(Country)' and listname='Country'

Some validation fires before other validation... So after all other validation has taken place then the server items covered under server side validation should be displayed.
