I'm finding that laying out large forms with many fields can be very tedious.  Can I just add the fields directly into the DynamicForms_Questions table as long as I'm careful about what I put in there?  What are the pitfalls to this approach?

This is not something that we actually recommend.  You can do it but it will be difficult for us to offer support if something goes wrong.  

Are you on Dyn Forms 2.7 already?  Our drag and drop feature should help in easing the pain of creating large forms.  Also, please take advantage of the Question Wizard from the Module Menu.  This will help you perform the same task and apply it to multiple questions with one update.
