    Background:

I have 3 forms that live on 3 different pages. When you click continue or submit I am getting the following error below.  The Page redirect is being called from the general settings tab in DF. The funny things I don’t get this error when I am login as the host user or admin.

The last page is connected to a Pay Flow Pro account.  I have been also getting InnerException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object errors.

I also have SSL attachaed to the page.

    I am using the following:
    DF 3.0
    DNN 5.01

    Thanks

I believe SSL is causing the issue. Perhaps the reason is that regular users cannot be redirected to those pages because of the "https" URL settings. What happens if you remove SSL and change it to a regular "http" link instead under Host / Site Settings?

I have done some further test and I have found that all of these problems arise from the validation of the form. If I don’t fill the required fields I get the A critical error has occurred. Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. But if I do fill in the required fields I have no issue.

Further test have proven when the following buttons are turned off in Module Configuration>Validation Configuration -Enable Client Side Validation and Enable Server Validation the form processes and works without an issue. Turn theses functions on and the form throws the error.

Seems when I change my skin back to the out of the box dnn skin DF works a without an issue. But when I put my skin on DF throws the error this goes with the contianers as well.

When the contianer is set to

The form works but when it is set to none form fails.

So What I know so far:

    1. The form will work if the validation is turned off.
2 .The Default DNN skin works and the form gets validated
    3. Add in my own skin and container with collapsible container setting and the form validates
    4. Turned off the collapsible container and the form fails and throws the error

I am totally at my wits end with this I have looked at all angles and still can’t find the problem.

Is there a way for you to test this on another version of DNN, such as 5.1 beta that just came out or an older, more stable version like 4.9? I'm at a lost as well. -- David

I am having the exact same issue.  I am using a skin by dnnskin.net.  I tried switching from Maximize to None and back, but this made no difference for me; critical error always (Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation).  I am running 5.0.1 also and the exception pasted above by Shaun is nearly identical to mine.  Please help!

What can I do to test or help debug this?  Thanks - Jeremy

Hi guys.. We are still researching this but at a first glance it appears to be affecting many other modules and so forth as well. These threads refer to this same exact error:

    Another Vendors Module

DotNetNuke Forums (no response on this one)

DotNetNuke Forums (many posts, same error and a few suggestions)

DotNetNuke Forums (same error, other suggestions related to making sure you have the correct AJAX toolkit installed?).

Dynamic Forms has some AJAX features built in that can be turned on /off. Can you see if you turn these off under module configuration, general settings, if this changes anything?

    Additional notes.

    Windows Server 2003, IIS 6
    .NET 3.5 SP1

The only non-core modules in use are Apollo Localization (MLHTML and skinobjects), Xiao Qi's Silverlight Photo Gallery 5.2, and Invenmanager's Calendar/Events 2.5.  That is it.  Like I said above, this is a recent, clean install, no junk (yet).

I tried disabling both AJAX settings in General Settings (each and both actually).  This made no difference.

I tried is with DEBUG enabled, no difference with that either.

Hi guys... I am just trying to narrow down the scope here on when this is happening and comparing it... A few things.

    1. Do you receive the error when signed in as HOST and does it matter if you are in edit mode/not in edit mode?
    2. For one of the forms I could duplicate this on, I was actually able to generate the error by simply navigating to the page and then clicking on 'Login' within the DNN skin (not even clicking on submit within the form and I generated the issue?).

I am thinking that its related to the DNN Controls Toolbar which does render on the form (this is used by the module for in-line editing of content and so forth) but its is hidden if you are not signed in. This is why I am wondering if its happening or working difference when signed in or when signed in and in edit mode VS not in edit mode (because then that toolbar is active). I still think this might end up being an issue with specific versions of DNN but not sure why yet (we can't duplicate it with any of our 5.01 or 5.1 RC versions at this time).

Also... Can you tell me any other features you guys are running. For example, some of the features that use the DNN Client API are features such as the 'Set focus to first field on form' and 'Set focus to field upon error' and so forth. Can you tell me if these are features you guys have enabled and if it changes if its not enabled? A good test might be to setup a simple page with just one field on it and see if you get the error... This might help narrow down the scope of what features or conflicting features are causing the problem.

    1. All my previous attempts were done not logged in (anonymous).  So I just tried it while logged in as Host.  I did NOT get the error and the page just re-displayed.  After a few seconds the email showed up with From, To and Subject line, but the Body was blank.  I went to Form Completion Events and re-opened my "OnSubmit(Email)" event and found that the body content (Rich Text Editor) field is blank.  Luckily I saved a copy and repasted it in there and hit the Update Event link.  This appeared to work, but I re-opened the event anyhow and sure enough, the body is blank again - it did not save.  I switch to Basic Text Box, pasted it in and hit the Update Event link.  This time it saved and shows up when I re-open.  However, when I switch back to Rich Text, it simply will not have my edits.

So now I try it again Anonymous and get the same "critical error" - but the email does show up, Body and all.  I do it one more time as Host, no error and the email shows up Body and all.

    2. I can confirm this behavior.  I go to the page, click on the standard DNN Login link and boom - same "critical error" again.

Well I am not getting this error anymore I upgraded my ASP framework to 3.5 and the DNN framework to 05.01.00 (773).
I still get the dnn.controls.toolbars is null on all DF pages. Not sure if this caused the issue.

I have disabled AJAX off all of the forms and I can say that I don’t think the AJAX tool kit has been installed on our server I must check that out.

But like I said the upgrade fixed my issue and turning off the AJAX from the form.

I would love to fix the dnn.controls.toolbars error any ideas on how to fix it?

As far as the dnn.controls.toolbars... Can you tell me when you go to admin, site settings, what configuration settings you have specified for 'In-Line Editor'. Does your JavaScript error for the dnn.controls.toolbars error still occur if you check/uncheck that setting? Glad to hear upgrading to 5.1 fixed the other issue!

    Shaun,

Hi. We have had a couple of users report this dnn.controls.toolbars issue, but we are still trying to duplicate it ourselves and figure out what the difference is. So, it was previously checked to be disabled? Basically what is happening is that there is some JavaScript (previous versions such as 4.5-4.9) that is called for the DNN Controls toolbar. We basically set the toolbar to be visible=false though when you signed out or in view mode. So, this is why you probably don't see the error message when you are signed in as host/admin and have the module in edit mode (is this correct?). So, worse case scenerio is we have to create a build for this situation without the DNN Toolbar Control. This toolbar is used for in-line editing so that you can change the header/footer and so forth just like you would for the Text/HTML module etc... For some reason though on some implementations of 5.0/5.1 setting the visible=false is throwing a JavaScript error. I think there is some code for performance reasons that will not load the JavaScript files related to the DNN in-line editor/toolbar (because it doesn't think its needed so it doesn't load them). I am still trying to research why this happens on some implementations and not others though. Can you think of anything that would be different from your implementation of DNN then others at all? Can you reproduce it on a fresh install?

Here is a thread that also relates to this on the DNN site...

Hi guys... I think that there are really two issues here but still not certain. Either way, I am posting a few possible solutions that I know of from some emails/other threads. My belief is that this is all related to some JS files that are not getting rendered for some DNN installations but I am not certain.

Possible Solution / Work Around #1

One issue was related to the JavaScript error that can sometimes occur in DNN 5.0 or 5.1, usually dnn.controls.toolbars is null. We determined that there were a few JavaScript files that were not loading in some implementations of DNN. We are not really sure why this is happening on some instances... Only if you were to click 'View Source' on your implementation and 'View Source' on a standard out of the box implementation (or dotnetnuke.com for example) you would notice it loads several JavaScript files such as /js/dnn.controls.toolbars.js and a few others... Well for web sites having problems it wasn't loading those files and this was throwing an error in Dynamic Forms. So... Although we don't know why it wouldn't load those files (this is outside of our module really and it shouldn't be doing this even if our module was never installed etc...). Is to use a module similar to Script Injector and add the scripts in manually. We have had two clients do this now and it seems to be a good work around at least. Here is a post that explains using Script Injector to Add Missing DotNetNuke JavaScript Files.

Possible Solution / Work Around #2

We had another client report similar errors to whats reported here and she follow up with some details into what fixed his issue.... This might be helpful if you find that these JavaScript files are not getting rendered in your implementation.

Thanks for posting my solution up there Chad. It is an extremely frustrating error and took some time to find the solution. I hope it helps others that are having the same problem as i know exactly how frustrating it is. The reason that the Javascript files are not being added is because of the control panel. There must be a dnn setting that shows/removes those Javascript files according to if the control panel is showing. By doing my above solution it forces the javascript to show. Be warned, if you are logged in as a page editor you will get some javascript errors as some files may be doubling up!!

    Enjoy,

    Cameron.

There is a cheaper one, however the gumbosoft one was recommended to me. There is another option that would save you money that you can do. You could create a skin just for that specific page (dodgy i know, but it would work) and you could add the javascript files into the skin. That way all other pages would be normal however the one with the dynamic forms module would have the javascript ready and raring to go!

Just step 3 in Cameron's solution actually works the same - if you make the dynamic form pages editable by all users, the error goes away . . .
But how do I now keep the users from actually editing the page????

I thought the same thing when i first found the solution but i am pretty sure that as long as you drop the script in that they don't have to be editors.

Could some of you who have experienced this problem please answer the following? I have a hunch that might help me isolate the problem over here without resorting to injecting scripts and stuff.

[ edited ] oh well, forget the question - i just disproved the hunch...

    Eric,

What was your hunch? I think at some point we discovered this was because the DNN web controls project wasn't loading the dnn.controls.js file when the form was in view mode.
