My web site crashed after installing "17318_0_DataSprings_InteractiveUserImport_PA+02.10.00". I have a site based on DNN 5.2.2 and it is located at a hosting partner.

I installed the program through the extension wizard in DNN, when it finished, everything looks ok and the last message was indicating the installation has succeeded. On the next click the whole web site crashed with this error:

[PolicyException: Required permissions cannot be acquired.]
System.Security.SecurityManager.ResolvePolicy(Evidence evidence, PermissionSet reqdPset, PermissionSet optPset, PermissionSet denyPset, PermissionSet& denied, Boolean checkExecutionPermission) +7604211
System.Security.SecurityManager.ResolvePolicy(Evidence evidence, PermissionSet reqdPset, PermissionSet optPset, PermissionSet denyPset, PermissionSet& denied, Int32& securitySpecialFlags, Boolean checkExecutionPermission) +57

[FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'SX, Version=2.1.3.2, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=882b9c044052e7f6' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission requests
    . (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131417)]
    ...

The assembly "SX" mentioned above is a Dataspring assembly. Please give me some help on this issue. What are the security requirements for this installation? What level of trust do I need to have.

    Thanks

    Anette

    Anette,

Hi. The latest version of the module uses a new assembly called SX.DLL (you can manually delete this file for now if its causing you problems). This updated assembly is a 3rd party component which handles excel/CSV imports on 64 bit operating systems. I believe it requires medium trust, its possible that it requires full but ill have to check.

I can get you an earlier version of the module which doesn't use this 3rd party component however the problem then is that the module will only work on 32 bit operating systems and not 64 bit operating systems. We can provide this for you though as it wouldn't require any additional permissions.

The 3rd party vendor/license is called SmartXLS (http://www.smartxls.com). I don't see the specifics for the requirements on their site, I believe when I emailed them they told me it required a Medium Trust environment.

Can you tell me where you are hosting? You can also open a support ticket to get an earlier version of the module which doesn't use this 3rd party component.

    -Chad

    Hi Chad
Thanks for your quick response. I had my site restored from a backup, so I had no possibility to try to just delete the file.

My hosting provider have “Medium Trust” as a security level so I think your vendor has to check the trust level for this component.

The server I am hosted on is a 32 bit windows system with IIS 6.0 so it would be nice if you can send me an earlier version of the module. I am not sure how to open a support ticket, is it just to email you on “contact us” and refer to you and this “post”?
    Kind regards,
    Anette

I just hit this error on a live site and I'm at a loss for words. One of the two portals on that installation has 400 paying subscribers and it just went down. Fortunately I found this thread quickly and I renamed the problem dll on the live site. The next thing I did was set my staging/test site to medium trust so this won't catch me off guard again.

How is it that a module (from such a reputable company no less) can be sold and installed without a notice or test regarding the full trust requirement?

I'm using V30_00_10. I've been testing importing an Excel file on the test site (my 64-bit Windows 7 laptop). I don't know what bit OS the live site is running. It's a shared hosting account. What are my options?

    Thanks, Paul

    Hi Paul,

Well there are a few things for this... First - The module has used this 3rd party component to fix other issues related to Excel not supporting 64 bit servers. So, we were fixing one issue by using this new 3rd party component but this then started causing the other problem.

Most of our customers are running (and have been running) on Full trust for some time now... So, at this time we will be requiring for use with these components that the site run in full trust to operate properly. I think that one of the items related to full trust is that DLL's and components cannot use additional DLL's within the component. So, any 3rd party component we use would require more trust rather then just medium.

Since DNN used to come out of the box as Medium trust until just recently, this didn't used to be a problem until just recently.

One great alternative that we might be able to offer is to offer a custom trust file that would allow for Medium trust in most areas except for the ability to offer vendors the ability to use 3rd party components within their modules. In general, this is something we would prefer to allow for medium trust but not something that is really something we can control.

Just as a reference, if you also google "DotNetNuke Medium Trust" you will find many other references and other vendors that have problems with this trust level, not just ourselves. Basically any module that uses another 3rd party component within the module is a problem... For example:

    Thanks,

    Chad
