Does Dynamic Views allow you to have the variable fields go horizontally in a grid view? In experimenting with the program, if I create a HTML table with just text all the columns line up no problem. But as soon as I start using variables, it seems to lose the fact that it's in a table as the columns no longer line up properly.

    Hi Pat,
Can you set this sample up on BetaSprings and then we can better look at the HTML code in the table and see what is going on? There is an area in www.betasprings.com that has samples of dynamic views. You can put your sample there with login: host, dnnhost. Just come back with a post and sample details and I will follow up with you.

    Thanks

Yes, and in general there is not a method for choosing "Grid" right now within the module, you can only select the free-form layout. Sometimes if the editor is putting in extra HTML within the template then you can choose "Basic Textbox" before saving the HTML. Sometimes for clients we have to choose the basic textbox option so that the rich text editor will not try and validate the HTML itself. This is useful if you want to use the header/footer for "Starting" table tags and then use the item template with table rows/table cell tags.

    Thanks,

    Chad

I put together a super simple test on the betasprings site so you can see what I'm talking about. (page simple test under data views) It's basically just a simplistic table that's pulling some email and names. It ends up rendering something like...

    firstemail@address.com   Joe
    second@adddress.com Frank
    a@b.org  bob
    reallylongemail@longdomainname.com Nancy

Instead of how it should be...

    firstemail@address.com                        Joe
    second@adddress.com                          Frank
    a@b.org                                                bob
    reallylongemail@longdomainname.com  Nancy

If I don't try and pull in variables, the HTML renders fine. It seems as if Dataviews is rendering each new line without consideration for the overall table?? (or I'm just doing something terribly wrong)

    Hey Pat,

I read the forum thread you’re referring to, so you’re having difficulties with your HTML table format when displaying the results in Dynamic Views.

I took a look into the page you created on betasprings.com and the reason it’s ending up this way is because you’re creating a table for the item detail template. Well in actuality, you’re creating a single table per record brought back so if you have a results count of 10 then Dynamic Views is creating 10 separate tables.

Please look at your page now:

     http://www.betasprings.com/DynamicV...fault.aspx

This is where the Header, Footer and Item Detail templates come in handy. The only bug/issue when using all three templates in combination is that the Telerik Rich Text editor won’t allow you to insert malformed HTML into the templates. So if I placed <|table> in the header then the rich text will automatically put <|table><|tr><|td><|/td><|/tr><|/table> Never mind the “|” in this HTML, I’m just placing that so these tags don’t get rendered when you receive this email.

What you have to do is use the Basic Editor -> HTML for the Header, Footer, and Detail Template.

This is what would be in the Header:

    <|table>

This is what would be in the Item Template:

    <|tr><|td>[email]<|/td><|td>[name]<|/td><|tr>

This is what would be in the Footer:

    <|/table>

Let me know if this makes sense or if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

I have similar questions/issues. I would like to be able to create a datagid view that pulls from the portal's css module (the row and alternate row css exists already) and apply this formatting to the grid's alternating rows. Is this possible? If so, do you have samples that I could build from?

    Thanks,
    Matt

PS It appears that my current table and format builds distinct one line tables as well.....

OK, I got the table working fairly well using the information you provided previously. It no longer creates individual tables, but properly displays the correct row information.

One nagging item -- can I use the alternating CSS style? I attempted to create a two row table, the first with the standard datagrid css, the second with the alternating row css. This resulted in the same record being displayed twice, once with each style, then it moved on to the next record and continued the same pattern of displaying the same record twice, each with a different style.

    Any suggestions? Thanks!
