    Hi

I have a rather unique request. We have distributors registering for the website from different companies, but we want to allocate different security roles based on their email address. Is that possible?

For example, during the registration, if the email address has a domain of gmail.com, I want to add them to a security role of "gmail"; and if the email address has a domain of yahoo.com, I want to add them to a security role of "yahoo".

    How is this done?

    Hi Reuben,

You might do this using javascript/client side events on the email field to populate a hidden AddRole field and then fire off the role events based on the AddRole value. Hope that helps!

I tried that but it didn't work.

Just to make sure that we are both talking about the same thing. I added a Completion Event for Event Type DotNetNuke Role. Then I configured a Dynamic Field = Email Address equals a javascript string.

Is that what you are referring to?

oh wait - i think you meant that on the question validation, create a javascript code that populate a hidden field and use that hidden field to fire off an AddRole.

Then my question is back to the javascript - any examples of how to populate a field using javascript validation?

No, actually, I was thinking of a client side event under Advanced Field Options when you edit the email fields. Not a javascript expert but basically, your logic should be something like IF email domain is yahoo, then $(AddRole)= Yahoo.

So you're really not validating the email address, you're just creating if-then statements to populate the $(AddRole) field.

I have been working on this all day and not getting it.

First, is $(AddRole) really a function that I can use? Because I have tested it and it didn't work. I did what you suggested:

On the email field, under Advanced Field Options > Client Side Events, I added this one line

    $(AddRole) = Yahoo;

I have created a security role called "Yahoo". Based on what I understand, every registration should put the account into the Yahoo security role, correct? But it doesn't do that.

    Hi Reuben,

I thought I would jump in here after reviewing these... The AddRole would be assuming you had a field on the form called AddRole and you wanted to set this value so that when you created Dynamic Completion Events you could then specify to only fire certain roles where this might be based on certain values (such as Yahoo or GMail, etc...).

Approx how many roles will you be adding and how many options? If there are a lot then I would probably suggest created a stored procedure to handle a SQL Event instead of a role event.

    Thanks!

I have this same request and think I understand your proposed solution.
But can you provide an example of setting up the client side script.

I will setup a hidden registration question called 'emailDomain' I would like to have javascript set this value.

Then a registration event will associate the user to a Role which has the same name as the emailDomain value.

    Thank you.
