I like Dynamic Views up to a point.  What I would like to have is the ability to create an interactive query on the fly.  More specifically, I would like to be able to pick the fields I want in the query on the fly.  Then what I could do is put all the fields on the form, and pick the filter setup for each.  Oh, and I would like the ability to sort on a field in the resort table by just clicking on the header row of that field.  Is there anyway to make DV do this, or does anyone know of another module that will.

    Hello Terry,

There are many reporting modules available that are compatible with DNN. I believe that Indoogrid has Header Sort columns however I don't believe it's very intuitive for new users.

I have become an expert in OpenWebStudio(OWS) and I would recommend this development tool 9 times out of 10 for "savvy developers". There's a large learning curve to use this module, however if you invest the time and effort you'll find OWS one of the most useful open sourced modules for DNN.

When it comes to new DNN users I would recommend Dynamic Views or the next step may be Indoogrid.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Hi - Yes, I believe that Dynamic Views can already do a lot of these feature specifically. I know that you can filter, sort, search, based on a "on the fly" query. I don't think when you use the GRID option you can sort by clicking on the column name, I think you have to select the column you want to sort by from a dropdownlist.

    Thanks,

    Chad

Don't get me wrong, what's there is all very good.  I guess what I'm looking for is someway to add two features that are important to me.  The first is the ability to put a tick in a checkbox of any field we want to see in an answer table, and the second is to be able to resort that answer table by clicking on any field's header of the table.  I do like the current the ease and functionality of adding the fields (and their conditions) to be sorted.  Finally, how would I create an instance of the module on a page that could be used by several users, and as such would need 10-12 possible filter fields.  How can I display these field choices for filtering in two colums (or maybe 3) rather than one long one so it doesn't scroll off the page.

    Hello Terry,

Dynamic Views Search Filters can't really be moved around too easily. So what I've done in the past is that if a customer needs a specific layout for the Search Criteria filters then I would add a Dynamic Form above the Dynamic View.

The Dynamic Form will give you the ability to achieve the look and layout you want.

Then you will have these same Search Filter in Dynamic Views but will hide the Search Filters and Conditions. This is so the filters can collect the values from the Dynamic Form and perform a search.

You'll use the Allow Free Form option of Dynamic Views. This option really opens up the capabilities and power of Dynamic View. It allows you to build a custom SQL Query as well as Custom SQL Constraints.

Using Allow Free Form is what I would consider as Advanced usability. There's a combination of features that need to be utilized to get this to work.

There's many modules that perform similar functions as Dynamic Views however where some modules lack other modules exceed. From my experience it's all about which features you absolutely need and from there you can begin eliminating which modules are possible solutions and which ones aren't. Dynamic Views is a very powerful module which enables functionality at your fingertips(by checking checkboxes, selecting from a combo box). Dynamic Views is geared towards assisting the non-advanced crowd, even though it can be configured to work in an advanced manner.

You'll find other modules out there that can sort by header columns, however other features you'll need might not be available.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    Ryan
