We have a typical Contact Us form set up using Dynamic Form 4.1. The contact form has a field called Comments which is a multi-line text box. When people enter info into this text box and use the return/enter key, it is causing carriage returns to show up in the exported xls file. So instead of the comments all showing under the Comments column, they wrap down and occupy an entire new row(s) for each cr/lf.

For example the result in excel looks like this:

    Name          Email                       Comment
    Rob             me@here.com         short comment
    Joe              me@here.com         This is a
    multi line comment
    Ted              me@here.com         Another short comment

Carriage returns/line feeds should not appear in the exported file as it makes the import into Excel useless as Excel sees the line feed as a new row.

How do I prevent this from happening?

    Hello Rob,

Can you actually see a CR or LF character code inside of your multi-line textbox response?

You may be able to perform a REPLACE using SQL or JavaScript(on Client side).

Please let me know if you see a character code inside of the response from the user's form submission which includes a CR/LF.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Thanks for the reply Ryan. Yes the line feed (lf - 0x0a) appears in the text itself and this is why Excel wraps the line to a new row. I can't believe nobody has had this issue for as long as Dynamic Forms has been around!

I believe there should be an option in the multi-line textbox field editor in DF that allows for stripping line feed characters from the text. OR, during the export to Excel, remove them at that time.

In the meantime, what do you think is the best way to address this?

    Thanks,
    Rob

    Hello Rob,

I recently have encountered this, but didn't realize this may be due to a CR/LF. Issues that seem so apparent, really can go unnoticed for some time, as you've experienced this first hand.

In the past we've encountered similar issues, but not the same as a CR/LF, more so like special characters which caused tabular mayhem in the Export.

    Here are my suggestions:

1.) Use JavaScript to disable the use of the Return/Enter key inside of this Multi-lined textbox. Great example here:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/...-enter-key

2.) Create a Custom SQL Table to store your Dynamic Form submission results. This way you can control the data, by stripping out any CR/LF.

2a.) Then create a Dynamic View to use this custom table as your datasource. You can then use the Export to Excel capability in Dynamic Views.

Please let me know if this helps.

    Thanks,

    Ryan
