    Hello Ryan,

    We have a Form Demonstration in which showcases how to achieve this functionality. Please visit Demo 31 to see the technique.

    As for scheduling for a premium hour of support. Please contact us by using the Contact Us control we have on our site.

    If you have any questions please let us know so we can be of assistance.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    Ryan-i tried to implement like the example showed but had not luck. I also exported the example and imported it into my portal--no luck. I also exported another example on your site with no luck. I can see the java section for this in my java file but for some reason it does not appear to "activate". Do I have to turn java capability on within dot net nuke?

    Hello Ryan,

    If you follow the directions exactly in the form demo 7, you will be able to create this functionality.

    Are you making the short name of your text area box MyComonkeypressonkeyup?

    Then are you making a div tag in the footer template of the question field MyComonkeypressonkeyup?

    In the div tag you should put some text that will be default text, also with the div tag give it an id ="divMessage".

    Now go to the client side event in the advanced field options of the MyCommonkeypressonkeyup and insert this:

     countChars('divMessage',$(MyComonkeypressonkeyup),255)

    the parameter divMessage is the id of the DIV tag your passing, and you're also passing the token MyComonkeypressonkeyup which is the short name of your text area box.

    Be sure you go to the Custom Javascript file and that the function countChars exists. If you're calling a function that doesn't exist you'll receive an error.

    Please let me know if this helps you.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    I could be doing something wrong but I followed the instructions exactly..and the footer just appears as
    < DIV ID="divMessage" >Text here if you want default text to be displayed < /DIV >

    with no change when typing. Again-I have even tried all of your examples by importing them into my portal and they did not work..although I could see the red character limit. Is there something I am not turning on for the system to recognize Java?

    Hello Ryan,

    I am unable to go into further details as I feel I have described the process as best as I could. Would you be able to email us temporary host rights (user name, password and URL to the page with the short field name that you would like this feature on). Please go to the 'Contact Us' on the Data Springs Menu and submit an email with the credentials. I will be able to set this feature up for you. Don't post your credentials here in the forum thread.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    I set this up and it worked beautifully (THANK YOU) except... it automatically starts counting at 1 - so as soon as you type in the first character, it says you have used 2 characters out of the total allowed. The demonstration is working this way as well. Is this a problem with the javascript itself? Is there a minor tweak to ensure that it starts counting from 0? Thanks!!

    I think I found a solution - by changing the first line of the javascript function from:

    var totalLen = txtVal.length + 1;

    to:

    var totalLen = txtVal.length;

    That seems to have done the trick...
