I have experienced a recurring problem where I end up with extra space between the 2nd and 3rd column on my form after I have done some rearranging and modifications to play around with improving the layout.

However, even after I change things back and verify that no fields have an extra wide Field Width, I cannot get the space to go away.

Has anyone else run into this and if so, how did you fix it?  It just happened to me on another form... and I have even verified via the database that there aren't any settings for the fields that should be causing the extra space!

Hi. Is this with the latest version of Dynamic Forms? I know this was a problem with earlier versions such as 2.7 against newer versions of DNN. The reason is because the rich text editor can sometimes add in extra P or BR tags. Even if you are on a newer version maybe the editor is doing this when you update fields? To check go into the question header/footer and choose "Basic Text Box" then make sure and take out and any all HTML there when saving a field.

Yes, this is with the newest version (3.4, or 3.5 for me since I have the version with the Telerik file upload).  I checked for extra tags in the header and footer and did not find any.

This happened again on a new form I just created - only it was between the 1st and 2nd column... until I added a new question that did not have "Display label and field in same column (Override general setting):" checked and then the space moved over to between the 2nd and 3rd column.

Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom for me on this one? I'm still running into it and I'm out of ideas on how to address it. The problem is worst in IE8, where there are extra spaces between the 1st and 2nd columns, but even in FF and Chrome, there is extra space between the 2nd and 3rd columns...

    Thanks!

Can you reproduce this in the Betasprings site?

Yes a good route to undertake is by trying to reproduce this issue in another instance of DotNetNuke(same version you're running) to narrow down if this is a local environment issue or a global issue in the DNN version that you're using.

www.betasprings.com is running on 5.6.1 and if by chance this is the same version of DNN that you're running on I would test on this site to see if you can instantiate the same issue. Not that it really matters if you're running on the same version, let's test it anyways just to see if you can get the spaces to arise in our test environment.

    www.betasprings.com (Login: Host / dnnhost)

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Thanks for the suggestions, Chuck and Ryan.  Interesting results... I exported the form and tried loading it to betasprings and also to a development site that I have (which is on a completely fresh, unaltered install of 5.6.2).

    BetaSprings:
    http://www.betasprings.com/DynamicF...paces.aspx
    DNN 6.0.0
no extra spaces (viewed with IE8)

    My dev site:
    http://webdev.cda.org/sandbox/forms/spaces.aspx
    DNN 5.6.2
has the extra spaces (viewed with IE8 also)

I guess that means that I'm on my own then and that it has something to do with my skin, CSS or something else different about my site??

    Thanks for all the help!

I'm still stumped on this one... and I don't believe it could have to do with CSS differences since the settings are the same on both (all) sites.  I am now thinking that this issue has something to do with the fields where the label is in a different column and how it determines where to wrap that field label.  The "Word wrap field label" is set to unchecked in the General Settings in all cases (and that seems to mean that it would actually wrap, so it is backwards?) and the label wraps... but where it actually wraps is the issue.  On the betasprings site, even though the column span is 2 for the last field, it is wrapping the label at one column wide... and I think that's why it doesn't have the spaces.  On my other sites, it is wrapping at 2 columns wide, which is correct... but even then, sometimes it seems to let it extend beyond 2 columns wide before wrapping, thereby causing the spaces between the columns where the other fields are one column each.  (Also, if I change that word wrap setting to checked it doesn't wrap... but then when I change it back, it wraps but the spacing/wrapping is now off by even more.)

Help... definitely still the worst in Internet Explorer but present in other browsers as well.

One additional note... on the new form I'm working on that is being plagued by this issue, the column spacing is pulled in (better, but not perfect) after I answer the 2nd question, which then displays a conditional field in the 4th column of the form:

    Hi Cheryl,

I know you're testing the v4.0 beta. Are you still experiencing the same problems with v4.0? You can comment here in the forums or continue communicating via email. Please be sure to copy dnnsupport@datasprings.com so I can monitor because Chad's been having email issues. Thanks!

Candace... yes, I am still seeing this issue even with version 4.0.  I have the new version running on a few sites and have seen the problem continue on all of them.  I played around a bit more on one of my dev sites (see http://webdev.cda.org/dnn_06.00.01/...ni40.aspx) with fields that were Text/HTML, header messages, radio buttons across more than one column, etc. but nothing has resolved the spacing.  (And I noticed that the word wrap label field was renamed in the new version and I unchecked that, which reduced the space but didn't eliminate it.)

Hi Cheryl - A few things here...

    1. Right now, when setting colspans this is limited to only when you are using the field and field label in the same column. We might be able to change this later but basically we only allow for setting the "Colspan" one single time... And when you don't enable the field label and field in the same column, you are not able to set the real colspan for the column that the field is in. We might later add a "Colspan" properly for both the label cell and the field cell but will probably need to review this and also see how it affects existing fields first.

    2. The other pages you mentioned above (that are not working) don't appear to be valid anymore. So maybe let me know either here or via our emails a few pages that are having problems and I will see if I can review them using the Inspect tool for FireBug for FireFox.

    Thanks!

Yes, I noticed that the ColSpan setting is only for the field label when the label and field aren't in the same column. I just tried changing that back to 1 for all of my questions that don't display both in the same column and it didn't fix the issue. I also tried changing those questions to be displayed in the same column (label and field), it also did not seem to have any effect.

The form I was just using to try this out is now at http://test.cdafoundation.org/Recei...tApp.aspx.

(Also noticed throughout this testing that a footer from another question somehow got populated into another one where it shouldn't have... the form gremlins are at it again! )
