How do I display to the user which fields are the "required" fields?  The only way I can find is when they click the update button?  Then, the form displays the required fields, but usually I display a "*" next to the label or the input field to show the user that the field is required.

I know there is a "Required Field Text:" option, but that is for the error message that is display next to the input field.

Is there any way to do this?

    Thanks!

You can either display a * within the field label, or another option you might want to do is to add the * as example text. With either of those options you could display within the header or footer of the module "* denotes required field" which is a pretty common stanard for required fields.

This might also be a good time to mention that we are working on some additional enhancements for required fields. We have implemented the enhancements with the pre-release of Dynamic Forms 2.1 already and are getting ready to bring them over to Dynamic Registration for the next beta/release.

The enhancements will allow you to select between client side validation and server side validation. With server side validation you can also require fields such as radio button, listbox, checkbox, etc... You can also select if the original dropdownlist item (ie.. < Select >) would throw an error if you set the field to be required, basically if the field is required they cannot select the first option because its not actually an option.

I did as suggested (the asterisk in the example field), but if nothing is entered into the field, another asterisk is displayed along with the message I set for the required field. How do I keep the “required field” functionality but eliminate the second asterisk?

    Suggestions are appreciated!! Thank you.

Hi. Well I believe you could remove the asterisk from the .ascx.resx localization files within the module however if you can hold out for 2.4 which will be out within the next couple weeks that versions will support the ability to set both the required field text and validation error. You will have much more control over this. You might also look at just enabling Server side validation under general settings and not client side validation which is throwing the asterisk.

You can demo some of the upcoming functionality for Dynamamic Registration at www.betasprings.com. Some of the upcoming enhancements have already been added to the Dynamic Forms module so you might check that out.

I tried to register on Betasprings, but the registration hangs - maybe you have the option for duplicate email addresses checked?

Actually the purpose of betasprings.com is not really to register. We will refresh the site on a regular basis and sometimes the point of the site is to try and actually break it. For now you can just use the standard Admin and Host accounts, the site will refresh on a regular schedule. The real reason for the site is to give users the ability to demo new features and duplicate/replicate bugs for support cases and so forth. If we can replicate issues on our servers its much easier to test and debug them before a release. If we only can generate issues on other users implementations this is more difficult to replicate and we don't always know if its something related to their install etc...

Release 2.4 is better when it comes to required fields, but I would prefer the standard/most common method which is to use a red asterisk in the field somewhere when the page is initially displayed. It seems somehow "disrespectful" not to tell a person that specific fields are required at the beginning and give them the chance to fill it in before we give them an "error" message telling them that they didn't fill in a field. I tried adding a red asterisk to the field name, but the html tags or class became a part of the field.

Using the Question header seemed like a good option, but the problem with that is that the data entry box is on the next line. If I could get the text box on the same line as the field lable and red asterisk, I would be happy! Can you help please?

Hi, I would like to support the wish of ccain. I have similar problems with the way the required fields are handled. Just two more options - required field symbol and required field stylesheet - would do.
I could overcome this problem by making the asterix part of the field label, but I don't like that much.

Hi guys, yes 3.0 has even more options for validation but we will continue to review these. One option would be to display a message in example text. Some of the issues with the * and client side validation come from an issue with client side validators throwing javascript errors starting in DoNetNuke 4.4.x and Dynamic Registration. We believe this is related to some caching issues but at any rate we have had to display the client side script that woudl automatically show the * etc... Either way, we are listening and taking in all input

I outline some of the history of Dynamic Registration and validation controls in a recent post here.
