Has anyone done this successfully? Changing the MX record associated with the DNN domain, to use gmail instead of mail services of the hosting provider?

Can this be done, and still have Opt-In email work? Including bounce management, distribution tracking, scheduling?

We have tried to make this work, without success. We are about to create a new, mail-only domain with the same host, and use email addresses from the new domain for noreply and reply to mailboxes.

Has anybody made this work? Using google apps is very desirable, vs. standard host-based email, and it would be nice to be able to do so along with using opt-in email.

Once again, updating my own thread...

Setting up a separate mail-only domain on the same server, and using a mailbox in that domain for the noreply from address (and the host smtp address) seems to work.

I still have the question of why all emails are counted as "failed distribution" even though they actually are sent and delivered, and read tracking and bounce tracking is working.

Hi Worth - Can you tell me what version of DNN you are running on?

Also, we did find a bug if you were using the 'Alternate SMTP Settings' where the alternate settings were not being used and the host settings was overriding those. This is fixed in the upcoming 4.3 release which should be ready next week.

As far as why they are showing failed I am not really sure... Are all showing failed or just some? Basically the SMTP server function call in dotNetNuke should be returning a "" (blank) for successful emails, otherwise there was an error returned. In your case it sounds like its not returning a blank but rather something else?

     DNN version is 5.4.2

Added a known bad address to a test group, most recent test showed 4 emails sent, 3 failed, 1 bounce.

Using alternate configuration, to be able to send from noreply address, which is what bounce checking is configured to check. That seemed to work, as the log showed that bounce checking checked the right maibox, deleted the bounced email, etc.

    Three good addresses were delivered.

How can I check return code?

Is it possible the return code check is reversed?

In my most recent example, with three good addresses and one bad, the failed count was 3, would have expected 1.

Hi... I am not really sure in that case... IF you go to Admin/Event Viewer right after getting the failed distribution(s)/emails what do you see in the event log? If the email fails it should also log the failed response in the event log I believe.

So you did find a bug with alternate configruation?  I've never been able to get the module to work using an alternate config, which is the only option I have (either using Google Apps or via another service like AuthSMTP).

When will the fix be out?  it is not on Snowcovered as of now.

I'm also unable to get Opt In to work with Google E-mail via a POP connection.

Here's what the scheduler has to say:

Starting to check for bounced emails....
Executing bounceback schedule for - Softletter.
    Mail Host: pop.gmail.com
    UserName: softgram@softletter.com
    Alternate Mail Port:995
    Use SSL:1
    Total Count (to process): 200
Error: Could not verify pop email connection to pop.gmail.com
    Default Port:995
    SSL:True
    POP UserName:softgram@softletter.com
    POP Password:XXXXXXXXX
MailMan Last Error:ChilkatLog: VerifyPopConnection: DllDate: Sep 12 2008 Username: WEB01$ Component: .NET 2.0 / x64 IdleTimeoutMs: 30000 ConnectTimeoutMs: 30000 Timestamp-1: 16:52:13.723 Pop3Connect: Connecting to POP3 server hostname: pop.gmail.com port: 995 ssl: 1 connectTimeoutMs: 30000 heartbeatMs: 0 socket is not ready for writing ConnectTimeoutMs: 30000 Connect function failed. I have confirmed these settings are correct and they work in clients such as Outlook.

    Any idea what's going on?

OK, one problem I've discovered is if you're using a host provider, make sure they allow your SMTP server to go out through port 995; also make sure you're OPENED port 995 on any box you own.

If you're using IMAP, I believe you need access to port 993.

I'd like to ask a question about how Opt In counts bounces. Does the system use the same field in your data table to increment failed deliveries as well as bounce backs? Or are failed delivery counts stored in a different field? If so, what is the name of this field in the table?

Hi Rick... Yes both failed distributions and bouncebacks are stored as individual records within the DataSprings_OptInFailedEmails table. If its a failed distribution the column 'InitialFail' will be set to 0 and column 'Bounceback' will be set to 1. Corresponding fields for failed message and bounceback message will be populates as well.
