Hello, I have a combo box and my select clause looks like this.

Select provider_description as QuestionOption, provider_rate as
    QuestionOptionValue from rates

Now I want to add a '-- Please Select -- ' as a first option in the combo box.  I know I have to use an UNION ALL to add this.  But my problem is the QuestionOptionValue that I return in my original SELECT returns decimal values
    e.g.
    provider_description, provider_rate
    Carrier A, 0.451
    Carrier B, 1.10
    Carrier C, 0.0435

So what can I assign as a default value for the first SELECT of the '--Please Select--'

    Here is my syntax:
Select '-- Please Select --' as QuestionOption,  ???? as QuestionOptionValue
    Union All
Select provider_description as QuestionOption, provider_rate as
    QuestionOptionValue from rates

    Hello Chuck,

Your on the right track just to confirm you have an understanding of what's going on please see my blog post:

    http://www.datasprings.com/News/Blo...Forms.aspx

For the questionOptionValue I would use something like -1.

If you have any questions please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    Hi Ryan,
I did try to use -1 and it doesnt like it.  The questionOptionValues are defined as a money datatype in the SELECT where I am returning the provider_rate field.  Hope this helps you find my answer.

    Thanks.

    Hello Ryan,
I found out my problem.  I stated my problem on my original post that wasnt actually an example I was using in my SELECT statement.  I was trying to make a simple example and on my original post hoping that you can find the solution to my problem,.  As it turns out, my post was erroneous but your original answer was right on the money (No Pun intended).

My original SELECT statement should have looked like this when it returns the values in the combo box

    e.g.
    provider_rate, provider_rate
    0.451, 0.451
    1.10, 1.10
    0.0435, 0.0435

So when I assign as a default value for the first SELECT statement '--Please Select--'  before the Union All, I was getting an error.

    Here is my original SELECT:
Select '-- Please Select --' as QuestionOption,  -1 QuestionOptionValue
    Union All
Select provider_rate as QuestionOption, provider_rate as
    QuestionOptionValue from rates

Well, it turns out as I stated previously...the column provider_rate is a MONEY datatype so in the QuestionOption, it did not like the '-- Please Select --'.  So what I did is changed it to a MONEY type so now my SELECT looks like this...

Select 0.00 as QuestionOption,  -1 QuestionOptionValue
    Union All
Select provider_rate as QuestionOption, provider_rate as
    QuestionOptionValue from rates

Now, my combo box, works they way it should where the USER is required to select any values in it with the exception of 0.00.

    Hello Chuck,

I'm glad to see you're able to get your initial value working in your combo box,

If you have any other questions please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Ryan
