Hi guys,  I think dynamic forms can do what I need but there are no demos close enough to help me..
I have an EXISTING table in SQL, not in the DNN DB but a seperated SQL DB.
So this would be considered an external sql connection as far as dynamic forms module is concerned..

I want to be able to insert , update records to this "external" source..
Can someone point me in the right direction.
I tried advanced wizard and used select * from tbl but this just creates a form based on the sql table..If I submit the form with data then data gets added somewhere but not to external SQL DB ?
I hope this makes a bit of sense..
    Any help appretiated,
    Ray

Hi Ray - You just need to follow the SQL Binding demos at http://www.datasprings.com/formdemos. I think that these demos are 14 and 21 but there are a few others as well. These demonstrations cover how to insert data, delete data, and edit data using SQL Binding and SQL completion events. The only change between these demonstrations and your implementation is that you will need to use the 'Alternate Connection String' within the SQL Binding and SQL Events areas.

    Thanks,

    Chad

Hiya Chad and thx for replying..
I have been following Demo 14..

But when I submit my form all looks ok..
Report module shows the data has been entered but when I check my table in sql it is empty..

Form is obviously inserting to another table ?

SQL Query's that I use to add data & delete & update all name a table called DynamicForms_CustomTable_POD?

    This table is empty?

    Am I missing something?

    Ray..

Hi Ray - What is the query you are using in the reports module? Make sure you are not using the query from demo 13 where that module is actually using a query to pull from the Dynamic Forms tables and not your own flat table. You might also want to check out demo 21.

    Thanks!

    Hiya Chad,
I'm just using the "view form results" that is part of the dynamic forms module..

But I am checking the flat table directly in SQL Express? No Data..
The data must be in some default table ?

I will look at demo 21 also and try installing current Demo to see where I'm going wrong..?

Hi Ray - Yes the View Form Results pulls the data from the DynamicForms_QuestionResponse table(s) which has a foreign key relationaship and can be harder to get access to VS a flat table. So, this feature is always pulling from the modules internal tables and not the flat table.

So it sounds like you would need to check out your SQL Completion event adding the data to the flat table. What I like to do is enable 'DEBUG MODE', submit the form and notice at the top of the form the full/actual SQL Query its attempting to use. From there copy and paste that query under Host/SQL and execute it. What specific error do you receive?

    Hi Chad,
    I got it working..
I downloaded and installed Demo 14 and was then able to compare it to my efforts..

For SQL Add event I was using the word "All" instead of the word Add !! simple but a typo on my part....

Thx so much for your help..

    Just one final question..

You recommend using stored procedures to prevent SQL Injection attacks for Dynamic SQL Events?

    Is this absolutely essential ?

I find it easier/quicker to just use simple SQL query but If I am exposing my sites I will look into using SP..

    Ray..

    Hi Chad,
I've also noticed that If I add an "External DB Connection" and update event that the connection string is NOT saved..
As soon as you check the SQL Dynamic event the external DB connection field is empty again ?

    connection string eg :
    Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Initial Catalog=DNN ;User ID= dnn;Password= pw" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"

    Any Ideas why...?
If I use the correct connection string this will allow me update a table in a Differnet DB than to the one where DNN is installed? I sthat correct ?

Hi Ray - Can I ask what specific version of the module you are using? Yes, you should be able to enter something like that, although I think it would stop at pw" I don't think you would also list out ProviderName and so forth which is specific to the web.config.

So no data saves for the external DB? Are you running on 3.4?
