Reducing comment spam on a form without CAPTCHA

    Anyone have any suggestions on how to reduce comment spam on a form WITHOUT using a CAPTACHA?

     It's only a short form, name and EMail, I am getting a load of tripe from spammers.

     I wouldn't mind if any of it was the Buy my **** enlargement pills but it appears to be random statements, no links or anything.

    Can anyone suggest

    1. A way to reduce without a Captcha (hidden field? How to?)
    2. Tell me what the purpose of ths spam is? It does n't seem to do anything?

    Hello Rob,

    Can you please let me know what you mean by spammers? Are you stating that people are using this form and submitting it?

    I'm not particularly the most qualified to answer this specific question, however I would try to complicate the form a bit such as adding "Agree to Terms" checkbox or additional fields that would require selection before submission was allowed. Or maybe you could capture the browser navigator that the user is using to submit your form to determine if it's an actual person or a robot.

    This might help keep spammers away.

    I think in this scenario you may want to perform some research on web robots or how to reduce spamming.

    I used the definition spammers loosely.

    The form has name address and question on it. The question fields are full of rubbish, like quotes from books. Some (very few) have actual links in them (which I will not follow obviously) The ones that look like quotes from a book are just plain weird. I just cannot describe them (and will not in an open forum)

    Things like "gratefully descended treelike" (not an actual one) really odd phrases.

    I'm not sure about your suggestion of a checkbox, I think that too simple for a robot to bypass. I had read suggestions for hidden fields but cannot find any examples.

    This is only a basic form. I don't want to make it too hard or time consuming to fill in because some a-hole wants to sell blue pills or God know what.
