Hi- We are evaluating the Opt-in Email module (v4.40.10) on DNN Profesisonal v6.2.3 and have run into an issue. Here's the detail:
    • We successfully installed the module and added an instance to a page.
    • We did a simple test using the default settings and the module worked as expected.
    • We then started to configure the module setting through Control Panel.
    •  We then experienced an error (A critical error has occurred. Object reference not set to an instance of an object.) when saving through Control panel. I'm not 100% certain, but I believe we were updating the message settings when this error started to occur.
    • FYI, the error is thrown only when you are logged in. If you access the page as an anonymous user, the page loads correctly. See attached file for the Event Log details.
Look forward to your guidance, and thank you in advance.
    Mark Harle

    Hi Mark,

Can you please tell me if you get the error when logged in as admin/host or when logged in as a regular user?

Also, a few months back, I believe you had a similar error using v4.3. Would you please check if you have the chilka.net file in your DotNetNuke\Bin directory?

    Thanks!
    Candace

Candace - Thank you for the quick reply. In response:
    - The page errors out for all authenticated users: host, admin or regular user.
    - I reviewed the prior issue with the chilka.net file and I don't believe the issues are related. When we had the earlier issue the error condition was different, and resolved when I deleted the chilka.net file.  But I checked on this installation now, and we do not have chilka.net on the server.
What do you suggest as the next step?
    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi Mark,

Let me ask you a few more questions:

    1. How is the regular user getting the error? Are you allowing them to view the Control Panel?

    2. Did you load the Opt In - Opt In module and is this where the regular user gets the error? (where they manage their subscriptions)

    3. Is Opt In - Opt In visible to all users?

    4. Are they getting to this page through a link or are they navigating to it?

    Thanks!
    Candace

Hell, and thank you for your reply.  See my responses in bold below.
Also, I created a blank page and added a new instance of the Opt In - Opt In Email module.  I then did a simple configuration and the page loads correctly.  So I believe the issue has something to do with the module configuration I applied on the broken module.  However, I do not recall any error or notification messages.
    Please advise.
    Thank you

    Hi Mark,

Let me ask you a few more questions:

The error occurs when the page loads.

    2. Did you load the Opt In - Opt In module and is this where the regular user gets the error? (where they manage their subscriptions)
Yes, the only module on the page is Opt In - Opt In Email

    3. Is Opt In - Opt In visible to all users?
    Yes

    4. Are they getting to this page through a link or are they navigating to it?
Direct navigation through the address bar.

    Thanks!
    Candace

Hi Mark - I just reviewed the answers here and it does sound like an issue that might be related to the specific module configuration settings you enabled/changed on the other page. Do you know if you could try and setup/enable the same settings on the new instance that is working correctly?

Did you define maybe an opt in list based on security roles and then maybe delete/remove a security role?

    Thanks,

    -Chad
