This is a truly simple question. I want to make a phone book with fields first name, last name, and phone number. I want a form with just those three fields. I then want to input names and numbers, one after the other, by hitting a submit button, after which the cleared form pops up again. I then want to be able to (1) list all names and numbers in tabular form, with an edit icon next to each and (2) be able to page through each entry using the input form display, so that I can edit each entry one-by-one. I assume this is all possible with DynamicForms. Can you point me to a demo where this is done? Thanks!

Hi. Well the direction you are taking with the 'Demo 13' you mentioned in another post is for sure a start. We have had a few clients create more direct add/edit/update forms where the data is inserted into tables, then an edit icon can appear in the reports module to modify that listing etc...

I know it sounds like what you are wanting is easy because you are dealing with only three fields... but... 3 or 300 fields, you are still creating a 'small application' to insert the data, retrieve and show the data, and then edit/update the data. It can be done but will require the use of SQL Events for adding/updating the data, and then using SQL Default to pull in the value of when you want to be in 'Edit' mode.

We will try and get a Demo 14 out there that demonstrations this capability but it would require saving the initial data to a custom table, or it would require using the 'SQL Default' to pull data in initially based on a querystring variable passed, and then saving that data based on if its a 'Add' or an 'Update'.

    David,

Hi. We are still in the works of finishing Demonstration 14 but I thought I would give you an advanced look. Click on the link below to preview the demonstration:

Dynamic Forms Workflow Demonstration  - Add, edit, update, delete records

Basically the demonstrations covers your specific 'Simple phone book' solution to add, edit, update, delete. It should be noted however that this is more of an advanced solution using a database table outside of the Dynamic Forms. Future versions of Dynamic Forms will already have more directly build in edit/delete/save for later features that are directly within its own tables.  I still have to post the full solution with the IPORTABLE file and also the SQL to add/update/delete. The next full release of Dynamic Forms should have the ability for the Administrator at least to perform these  same steps without needing to use a  seperate table if you didn't want to.

    Chad,
Did you ever post the updated IPORTABLE file for Demo 14? When I download the zip file I get the demo 13 file.
    Thanks

    Troy,

Hi. Well we actually have not posted this demonstration yet (I know its available from that link but its not on the list yet, you will also notice that the description has not really changed from 13 but we are working on it). The reason it has not been posted is because during the implementation we added some features to the upcoming 2.7 release (specifically direct SQL Binding and easy to use wizards for creating flat tables and inserting/updating/deleting from those tables) so... We are waiting for the full 2.7 release to be published before posting these demonstrations (very close, still pending some minor testing and Aleksandar is finishing up the documentation this week).

You can accomplish what you are wanting to do with 2.6, however you have to use SQL Defaults for each field. The binding feature that is added in 2.7 allows for a single SQL statement that can be enabled based on a querystring variable and can also pull in all records based on a single query instead of using one for each field.

Waiting eagerly for this release as it will be very helpful in creating a Helpdesk ticketing system. When is 2.7 expected to go live?
