I'm having trouble understanding the mechanics of how df is storing and retrieving sessions or cookies.  I'm building a form where someone selects a class from a combo list.  I've set the value on one option of that list to a specific number representing the price of the class.  I've checked the advance option to pass that value to the session (and have also tried cookies).  When that particular class is selected (there's only one that does this right now), it fires a question event that opens up/makes visible/un-hides additional elements, including a text field where I want to show the cost of that class.

On the cost field, I've checked the get value from session in the advanced options but am not getting the value from the combo list.  I've tried this with both sessions and cookies and don't get anything either way - but using the querystring to pass the value when the form loads works - so I figure I'm doing something wrong or have misunderstood the process.

Assuming that the scenario I describe is workable, do I need to set the value of the field where I want to see the stored value to something specific or ?

    Thanks in advance.

HI, so let me try to understand what you are trying to do:
    1) you have a combobox field (set to pass session variable)
    2) you have a textbox field (COST), set to get from session variable

Passing session variables only works when you are on another form. So if you have another dynamic forms page with the same field names as the combobox field and you have it set to retrieve from session variable then it will retrieve it.

The way you have it set now, the combobox and textbox fields are on the same module / page so in order for the textbox field (set to retrieve from session variable), that must mean that another previous page with the same fieldname has to be set for it to retrieve, otherwise it can't get anything on page load.

I'm wondering how you are getting it to work using querystring variable. Do you have it manually typed up in the URL? -- David

Yes - I was manually typing it in for one item but for the other, I'm accessing the form from another page so I added the DF module, created a link with a hidden field with the amount I wanted, clicked on the link and Bob's Your Uncle - worked. Thanks so much.

I'd still like to be able to have the ability to populate a field depending on the option selected.  Would it work if I wrote a function to get the value from the selection (using the guid and the extension indicating the item) and then re-write into another field - something like getElementById([guid for price field]).value = getElementById([guid for selected element_X).value' ?

HI, you can populate a field based on a field selected. Check out dependent drop down list (demo 11):

Also check out question events (setting defaults where you can set default values based on another selection). However, that selection cannot be something you type into a textbox field. -- David

Thanks - I find that I keep trying to do things in DF just like I would do if I were creating the form from scratch. It turns out that I have different courses, each with different prices. Trying to pass things from sessions or querystrings was problematic because if anyone got to the form, they couldn't sign up for anything because the price was coming from somewhere else. So, I created different questions for the different courses and opened up whatever price field was necessary for the selected course. Bulletproof and much easier to implement.

Thanks for the depenedent drop down lists too - that will come in handy too.
