    Hello again,

I'm using the Image upload field type, which is going to be extremely useful!

I've got it set up to save only the thumbnail and to display it on the page.

When the option to "Upload new file" is clicked after uploading the first file, the page just refreshes and does nothing.

When clicked a second time it says "The file you uploaded is not allowed. Please check the file type and confirm that the file is an image in jpg, gif or png format."

The file types arre of course allowed.

Repeatedly attempting to select and upload an image at this point simply results in the same message over and over again.

When I check the server, the files are actually being uploaded... but the form continues to display the error message as described.

If I leave the page and return, I can repeat the exact steps already described, with the exact same results.

I also notice when watching the server folders, that although I've set it to save the thumbnail only, it is in fact saving two copies of the original file plus the thumbnail... 3 in total.

    The module is version
    15668_0_DataSprings_DynamicForms_Module33_61_DNN45PLUS
    running on DNN 5.4.4

    Hopefully it's a not a hard one.

    Adding to the above

If I disable the "Preview image enabled" option, and still keep "Save thumbnail only" enabled, no thumbnail is saved at all... only two copies of the full size image.

Definitiely something odd going on here.

I upgraded dyn forms to 33.61but I also am getting the mulitple images saved to the DynForms_Images folder when I only wanted the thumb saved. I am getting 3 copies, two of the original size with different file names and one (the one I wanted) preceded by Thumb_ . Filling up the file server space big time.
It also appears using the token for the image is picking up the wrong file reference.

On this topic, is it possible to save multiple SPECIFIED SIZE copies of the image? EG. thumbnail 100x100, midnail 200x200, large 500x500?

    Hi Paul,

Just checked with the dev team and it looks like it is saving multiple copies by design (for postback, etc.) but it uses the last one.  They may possibly make changes to this in the future.

At this time, it will save whatever the set thumbnail height and width when the image is uploaded.

    Hi Candace,

Please tell them that should definitely be changed. The whole point of resizing images is to stop the server filling up with large files.

Keeping the large file is already undesirable, but keeping two copies is doubly so.

But also... the related issue I reported in the first post in this thread is definitely a bug and needs to be addressed separately.

    Regards
    Rob

p.s. Perhaps they didn't understand that it was not just saving the copies as part of the upload and resizing process, but also keeping them for good?

    Thanks Candace/Robax
There is definitely something wrong with the current implementation of Image upload when selecting 'thumbnail' only. I only expect one image to be retained on my file server at the specified size as the documentation implies. Just to re-iterate, there are 3 copies of the image being stored, all with different names. Currently, when I use the token for the image thumb, it is pointing to one of the originals that shouldn't even be there... as a workaround I am manually renaming the thumb image to match the token destination in my templates. Really hope you can fix this soon - I am anticipating a large use of images on my site hence I only want to manage thumbs.

    Hi Paul,

It's always easier for us to push it through development if we can duplicate the issue you're reporting.  Can you please set up an example at our test site?  Go to www.betasprings.com and log in with host / dnnhost  and then create your page under Dynamic Forms.

Then please give us the URL to your test page and your results so we can review further.  Thanks!

Paul is reporting the same thing I'm reporting, which is what this thread is about.

    http://www.betasprings.com/Dynamic-Forms/111111111111/tabid/968/language/en-US/Default.aspx

Betasprings doesn't even get as far as uploading before crashing out so that's not really any use.

Just install dynamic forms on a clean system, add an image upload field, configure the field as I have done on that page above, and upload an image. Then go and examine the upload folder.

The module is configured to "Save thumbnail only" but fails to do so, instead saving the thumb and two full size files.

I went back to betasprings and removed the custom upload folder and let it use the default, and that stopped it crashing, so now you can test it there.

Go there, browse to a jpg on your local drive, upload it, see the preview.

    Issue #1:
When the preview is showing, don't click Save. Instead click "Upload New File". The result will be, as reported: "The file you uploaded is not allowed! Please check the file type and confirm that the file is an image."

    Issue #2:
Go to the admin, file manager and delete all files within "Portal Root\DynamicForms_Images\". Go back to the upload form I created, and upload a jpg. This time just click Save. If you are in IE, the image preview will have become a red X. Go back and refresh the "DynamicForms_Images" folder and confirm there are three images.

All of this is exactly as I described already and easy to repeat.

    Hi
I have just installed latest module 3.4 and the issue has gotten worse. If you select any options expecting a thumbnail - no thumb is created. My main goal is to save "Thumbnail ONLY". Now I get two copies of the original at full size and no thumb...
Any progression on testing this as Rob suggested?

Yes, I've jumped through all the hoops and have reported and demonstrated the issue clearly. The thread is a dozen posts long now and I've yet to receive a direct response for my efforts.
    Thanks

    Hello Rob and Paul,

Thank you for taking your time to address this issue to us. This does sound like a bug, I can go ahead and try to replicated how the images are getting duplicated into the database.

If, by following your instructions of how to initiate the error - works, I will gladly report this issue to our development team to revise and figure out how to fix this problem. If this goes through as an issue needing to be fixed, we will notify you two and get you a patch.

If you have any questions please let me know.

    Thank you Rob and Paul.

Paul / Rob - We are not aware of this issue and are reviewing this for an incremental patch or update. Please give us about a week or two as this wasn't discovered during the QA process and the cut off for the 3.4 release was July 15th. These threads have not gone unnoticed but please give us some time as its been a very busy week with the 3.4 release that went out.

    Thanks for your patience.

Hi guys... Please expect this path to be fixed with the upcoming (by Friday) patch for Dynamic Forms 3.4.30. There are a few other small enhancements to also limit the width, the height, and the maximum file size as well.

    Thanks,

    Hi guys...

Ok, this update is being posted as I type... I did want to follow up on a few items and explanations.

    1. The issue came about when we were adding additional options for an alternate file upload folder. The upload files and thumbnails should always be updating now.

    2. The image field property still does not currently work with AJAX, the next version will support this. The latest patch does support question events and other post backs though... so you won't lose your image after a postback within a question event etc...

    3. The duplicate files being saved has been taken care of now too. This was an issue because a temporary file would be created for preview and so forth and then a new file would sometimes be uploaded.

    4. There is still a minor file duplication issue that comes about if you preview an image, then change the image, etc...

    5. Enhancements were added to allow you the option to choose a maximum file size, maximum image width, and maximum image height. These should really help and have been requested for a long time.

    6. I think there was some confusion about the 'Save Thumbnail Only' so I have updated the labels. Basically what this was meant to do is 'Show thumbnail only' in areas such as view results, emails, preview, and so forth... so 'Show thumbnail, Show Full Image, Show Thumbnail with Link to Full Image' and so forth will still actually save the thumbnail and full image, just not always use it.

Let me know if you guys have any other feedback and I apologize for the inconvenience and time for the fix. There are still many enhancements on our list including using the Telerik Rad Upload or ASync Upload to support AJAX, the ability to create maybe a medium sized image and use it, the ability to save the data as an ID which is how DNN stores images and so forth but these enhancements and fixes have come a long way.

    Thanks,

    Chad

Have installed 3.40.30. Disappointed. Can't have auto preview set if there is an alternate upload path set. The image seems to get lost. If you set a max image size, an error message regarding file size is presented even when the image is well within the set file size limit. eg. file size is 697KB, I set 1000 and get file size errors can't upload.

    Hi Paul,

A few things... Some of this just might need some explanation or clean up. I did heavily test this so it might just need some labels or small changes.

    1. Are you using alternate upload PATH or alternate upload folder? The path itself is a map path such as c:\inetpub\wwwroot\somefolder etc...

    2. The alternate upload FOLDER is actually an alternate folder name which is still under your portals home directory (usually /portals/0)

    3. I believe we might need to multiple or change the label on the image size. The reason is because 1kb is about 1000 bytes... So, you might need to keep that in mind. If you enable debug mode you will see what its comparing and what the actual byte size is coming in. So possibly I need to change this to be the multiplying by 1024 OR I need to change the label to show limitation by bytes instead of limitation by kilobytes. I do know that it should work though... I would enable debug mode and see what its comparing when it fails... I think the issue is either a label change or me needing to multiply by 1024 instead instead.

    Thanks,

    Chad

Chad, thanks for tips. I have things working now. I can only suggest updating your labels or documentation for lazy people like me.

Using the "Alternate Upload Folder" field.

I wish I had of used the Debug mode previously as I saw the errors straight away. Using "/portals/0/imgbands" generates a bad string, all I needed to put in the field was "imgbands" problem solved. It works.

Yes, I found the image size label confusing. My image is 676KB so I set 1000, but I needed to set a minimum of 703000 to handle the file size required. It works.
