Chad after re reading another post I decided to repost this to help separate the issues.

I am using DNN 4.9.4
View report alone was working fine before I did this, reporting from the control panel never worked after updating to 4.3.6.
all I did changed the host smtp setting to use a different server. it did not work as expected so I changed the setting back to the original settings.
the report shows the system attempted to send 6 email and failed, nevertheless I received 5 of the emails opened them and check the report again 6 out 6 failed, 5 read, 5 read distinct, 1 unread.

I guess I am not going crazy.
In addition Chad you mentioned there is an upcoming patch, the latest patch on snowcovered is 4.3.6 dated 9/7/2010.
when is the new patch going to be available is it going to fix the reporting issues? is anyone have issue with reporting? Is there any way we could go back to 4.3.2 before I start a new DNN instance. I had to re-run the client's job 38,000 email because the reporting was timing out and still is. it was running fine with 4.3.2
If the patch is out I may have to renew my subscription.
