I'm trying to understand the basics of how the program works so that I better utilize it. Using your phonebook sample example, the PhonebookID shortname is DSParam1 which picks up its value from a query string, but how does it find that value in the string? What is passing it, or for that matter, is it just that DSParam1 will always find and use the uniqueId passed to it?

I see the stp_GetSamplePhoneBookItem $(DSParam1) and am wondering how that value is passed to the sproc.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello Collin,

Querystring parameters are name/value pairs that are sent through the URL. So if you have a field that has the short name of DSParam1 and has a value of 10, along with the Pass and Retrieve values from Querystring variable. Lets say that you have a redirection event that redirects you to the same page. Upon submission, the redirection URL will look like this:

    www.yoursite.com/example.aspx?DSParam1=10

Since you have the Retreive from Querystring feature enabled, this field is search for a Querystring that has the name of "DSParam1". If it exists, it extracts the associated value and assigns it to your field.

Now trying to understand your stored procedure call and how $(DSParam1) renders:

    exec stp_GetSamplePhoneBookItem $(DSParam1)

Say if DSParam1 = 10, then upon submitting the form, the value inputted or associated with DSParam1 will replace the token call "$(DSParam1)".

So upon form submission, the SQL Completion Event or SQL Default will render to

    exec stp_GetSamplePhoneBookItem 10

So the key is to understand that a token - $(Token) is a shorthand of:

    document.getElementById('Token').value // JavaScript

The name of the token is represented by the shortfield name of the Question.

Please let me know if this helps.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Ryan, thanks. I know that DSParam1 gets its value from the query string. I'm just not sure what inserted the value in the query string in the first place. In the example above, where did DSParam1 = 10 come from? What set that DSParam1 value in the query string?

I'm asking to know how I will create my own query string to pass my own values to a get sproc.

    Thanks.

    Hello Collin,

In Dynamic Forms when you enable the feature "Pass value from variable to Querystring" this is basically saying that upon submission of the Dynamic Forms, whatever value is contained within the field, to pass it as a name/value pair amongst the URL.

The name/value pair is generated by the following:

    Name = Question Shortfield name
Value = Value in the field

If the value contained within the field = nothing then the name/value pair will still be passed through the URL except the value will be empty.

So as an example, DSParam1 was just the Shortfield name of a field on a form. You will never manually create a Querystring name/value pair. Dynamic Forms takes care of this functionality when you check(Enable) the checkbox "Pass value from variable to Querystring" under Advanced Question Options.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    Ryan
